The publican and former policeman of 20 years was separated from the other hostages - his elderly mother, an indoor plant carer, a cleaner, a plumber, a stocktaker and a barman - and forced to sit in a chair next to the safe. They repeatedly shoved the barrel of a silver revolver into his mouth, wedged it under his chin, and pushed it into his forehead and his stomach as they made verbal threats to kill him. At one point the gunman, angry at security delays before the Bradbury Inn safe could be opened, rushed at him, wedging the tip of the gun to his head and warning him: "Don't f. . . us around - don't do anything stupid". But for the police media unit, the May 25 armed robbery was sanitised as an "incident" where pub staff were "detained". Do you have footage of a crime that's not been made public? Tell us below Mr Nellies relived his May 25 ordeal yesterday in the hope his account could be used in a public appeal to catch the bandits. Before being assaulted by the gunman in the safe room, Mr Nellies had been forced at gunpoint to let his 68-year-old mother into the pub. One of the hostages huddling in an adjacent room said it was awful to hear his boss pleading for his mother's life. She had called her son on his mobile from the door and the gunman picked up the phone, demanding of Mr Nellies: "Who is this?" When he told them it was his mother, the gunman barked: "Answer it. Nothing stupid." With a gun held to him, Mr Nellies opened the door, took his mother by the arm and reassuringly told her: "Mum. We are being held up. Don't say anything. You will be all right. It's all OK. Don't panic. Just look at the floor." It was only when the bandits left at 8.15am, almost two hours after confronting the cleaner Stan and a barman at the door with a gun, that Mr Nellies finally discovered his mother and the other hostages were still alive. Mr Nellies had enough experience as a police officer to know some details of crimes should be withheld for investigative reasons but he said: "Something like this should be advertised, the particulars of those crooks should be released to the public within reason."
